I waited in my Audie, tucked neatly in a line of cars on a long, flat, balding lawn. An old, white farmhouse stood proudly about fifty yards away, almost like it had been planted there like all of this corn. If I looked in any direction, I saw a glistening cornfield with tall September stalks reaching toward the sun.

I could see some people milling about in the yard behind the house, but I didn’t feel like I was close enough to Freddie to mingle with his family, let alone introduce myself. Hell, I didn’t even know if he was out to his parents.

For a moment, I fantasized about meeting his mother and father, making dinner for them or something, and winning their favor. There was something about following the steps of courting in a traditional relationship that appealed to me—it made me feel like I was a good man.

Part of me wanted to be part of whatever was going on in that farmhouse over there, because it would mean I was important enough to Freddie to want to integrate me into his family.

And then I remembered our age gap and felt a pang in my chest.

He was at the age where he was probably trying to get away from all of this and find himself; not buckle down and create something new with family revolving around it.

That, and, I knew that with a lot of folks in the LGBT community, there were a lot of complications that surrounded family things.

I saw a flash of color leave the white house and bold across the lawn toward me.

Freddie.

Even seeing him walk toward me at all caused a spark of delight to shimmer in my chest. In that moment, I knew I wanted Freddie more than any man I’d wanted in my entire life.

I thought I had something real with Max. But this felt…

This felt different.

Freddie looked left, then right, then spotted my car and hurried toward me.

My heart rate quickened.

He opened the door and slid inside. “Oh my God, thank you for picking me up!”

“No problem,” I said, feeling warm validation shudder through me.

I loved this.

I loved feeling needed.

And I loved it even more that Freddie let me help him. I knew that it took a lot of trust to admit you needed help.

I turned on the car and backed out of the spot. “You ready to go?”

“Yeah,” he sighed, staring at the house. “I’m so happy to be out of there.”

I wondered what could’ve possibly gone wrong in that house, but restrained myself from asking. If he wanted to tell me, I figured he’d do it when he was ready.

I pulled the car out of the driveway and said, “Back to Ann Arbor?”

“Anywhere,” he said. “As long as it’s with you.”

I paused and looked over at him.

His tawny eyes shone a beautiful golden color in this light, as if he was the treasure I’d been searching for my entire life.

In that moment, I knew it was true.

He jerked his gaze away and looked out the window.
